I have had the great misfortune to be lured into Kline Preston's service to do copyediting for him, work on a manuscript for a book translated from Russian. The guy will not pay me and I have been working on this for a solid month. He actually went to a small press down in Spring Hill yesterday, behind my back, and talked the owner into doing this work for him for $1 a page, until, that is, she discovered what a holy mess it is, then she notified his office that she had to bow out. He now owes me over $2,000.

He lures in translators as well, telling them they have to do 13 hours' worth of translating for him as a "TEST" for which he will pay them, then he doesn't hire them, doesn't pay them, and they never hear from him again.

I have read your blog tonight and passed the info on to someone that works for him right now but despises him...

What more can you tell me about this guy? His tweets that I read on your blogsite are terrible... he is a real hater of mankind--or anyone who isn't white and WASPY, from the South, isn't into guns, is tolerant of blacks and gays, and doesn't want to consort with the Russians, I guess!

Please feel free to email me back. I would love to get together with some of his former employees (he's had four come and go since August) to start a class action suit against him!

Then he requested I send him the completed part so he could check my progress, claiming he "needed to see what the formatting was doing," and I told him that he didn't my corrected document, he only needs to check the document he's got in the computer at his office! The nightmare formatting is of course present in the document in their computers as well. His translator told me NOT to send him any work, because he would take it and run with it and not pay me. So--I sat here and spent a few hours doing up a statement for him for my accumulated hours, and then sent him an email telling him why I was also sending him only two pages of the finished document. He paid me a $150 deposit on my work, after sending me the hard-copy document overnight without my requested deposit
included. I called and told him I would begin work once I received his check. I told him in my email that went along with the statement and the two pages, that $150 hardly covered the 97 hours I had spent in reading alone, line by line, and correcting it in pencil, and that he owes me for 197 hours, working on the formatting and inserting corrections, which I documented for him. That's when he turned around and went to a small press in Spring Hill that publishes and carries ONLY books written by southerners, in the "southern perspective"--Civil War, "Christian" (fundamentalist!), etc.--and tried to engage the president of the press's services for $1 a page! It's amazing someone would prostitute themselves that way! It's all I can do to keep myself from emailing her and telling her so! :-)

More information than you probably want to know, but I am livid; feel free to use this information with your case if you think it might add to the growing evidence that his whole M.O. is being a shyster and a con artist and a crook!

I don't know. I don't know if his translator would know about any of those things. I could ask her. She is getting ready to go home to Russia next week, because she has no health insurance, working for him has given her an ulcer, and she can get free medical care at home. She won't stand up to him in an overt way (which has given her the ulcer), so I don't know what she's discovered. She's only been there since November.

I'll ask her. I have told her not to do anything this week that could raise his suspicion or get her fired before she goes. I truly hope she will find another job upon her return. Soooo... I told her that I learned from intellectual property lawyers that the statute of limitations never runs out on i.p. theft and nonpayment of services rendered/procuring services with intent to defraud, SO TO GO FOR IT! I hope she will.

One last question, if you would: Is he married or divorced? He uses a cell phone that has a woman's name on it (Tiffany) and the translator has told me he only has pics of his kids in the office.

The office he is in now--I wonder if he moved because of trying to up his "image". The translator says it is weirdly laid out, very cramped, he had two people--translator and paralegal--sitting on top of each other in a very cramped space, and that their equipment is so antiquated it is hard to work on it. I can't figure this guy out! He shows on his website that he's won a couple of MULTIMILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENTS, YET WHERE IS THE MONEY? Lawyers usually get a big chunk of those settlements! Is he hiding it in offshore accounts??? What has he done with it? Buried it in the backyard?

If you call "writing off" $150, then I guess he has! I don't know--I'll ask more questions.

I learned that his books are published by "Kline Preston Publishing, Inc." That means self-published, and they are on Amazon. So maybe e-books. Although you can look at the inside of them. I was looking for the publishing information. He even preannounces on Amazon that he is publishing the 4-part Russian Federation Civil Code. So I guess that is what he means by the "deadline." He shouldn't have preannounced them! I wonder who is translating Parts III and IV for him?? His translator is gone for about three weeks.

Looking at his website again, he fully backs Putin and believes Russia holds fair elections and that Putin was FAIRLY ELECTED! Putin put himself back in office--that was always his plan. Everyone knows that! I can't believe what he professes and believes in!

Anyway... I guess he is just for some reason very interested in Russia and Russian business. ?? I think he spends all of his money getting these books to some small press, where they are done up and then they're uploaded to Amazon. I don't know how the Amazon thing works. Wonder if they do the printing of them? I doubt he sells many of them!
